Object storage
Object storage keeps each item as an object with data, metadata, and an identifier. It suits assets such as website files, images, backups, and documents.
Block storage
Block storage exposes a device that an operating system can partition and format. It is commonly used for virtual machine system disks and application data that needs a disk interface.
File storage
File storage presents files and folders through a file system. Shared file storage can let multiple clients work with the same directory structure.
A practical example
- Static website assets: store the HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images as objects.
- A virtual machine: use a block volume for its operating system disk.
- A shared project folder: use a file service that supports the required sharing and permissions.
Static does not mean unresponsive.
A static website serves prepared files without a server-side application generating each page. JavaScript in the browser can still provide search, calculators, and quizzes.
